This was St Hugh’s first major lacrosse tournament and we impressed, winning matches against schools who play lacrosse on a regular basis. We had a great start against Rendcomb, and really dominated with our possession. Sophia was on form, giving us an early lead, ably supported by Holly and Ottie. Downe House and St Swithuns were tough opponents but our defence was determined with Evie, Sophie and Alys working hard to help Katie in goal who made some fantastic saves. We had a satisfying win against Westonbirt with great goals from Ottie and Olive and some excellent attacking moves from Kitty Watson and Kitty Strutt. Sherborne was an unsettling game as Sophia came off injured and was out for the rest of the tournament but we held on for a crucial draw. The quarter final was tense with the girls feeling the pressure. Ottie, Lucy and Georgia worked tirelessly in midfield and Holly was excellent at centre winning many of the draws. Our stickwork and 1:1 defence let us down but Grace Watson saved the day with a goal which allowed us to progress on goal difference to the semi finals where we lost after a valiant effort to a stronger team and eventual winners. I was immensely proud of the girls’ determination and team spirit throughout the day. I believe they all finished the tournament better players and I was particularly impressed with Sophie and Olive who have only recently started playing.
Player of the tournament: Ottie Hunt - for her great play, excellent leadership and consistent commitment to the team through all 8 matches. Well done
